Celtic fans react as James Forrest is linked to Zenit St. Petersburg

James Forrest is a target for Zenit St. Petersburg, according to The Scottish Sun, and the Parkhead faithful are far from pleased.

The 28-year-old is wanted by the Russian side even after they splashed out £36.5m to sign wide-man Malcolm from Barcelona.

The report also details that Zenit would be prepared to give the Celts star £70,000 per-week to tempt him away from Glasgow.

The fee mentioned in the report is £12m, which seems low given how good the winger has been for the club of late.

Not only has the wide-man scored some huge goals already this season, particularly against Cluj and Motherwell, but he was a key performer last campaign.

He was pivotal for both Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon in his 56 appearances last season, scoring 18 and setting up an incredible 20 more.

His importance to the side hasn’t gone unnoticed amongst the Celtic faithful, and here’s what they had to say on Twitter about the interest in their winger…

Liverpool fans show their support for Xherdan Shaqiri amid attacker’s struggles

[ad_pod ]

Xherdan Shaqiri recently admitted that he was far from happy with his current situation at Liverpool.

Indeed, the 27-year-old has only played 11 minutes of first-team football in the early weeks of the 2019-20 campaign, with his sole outing coming in the Community Shield against Manchester City earlier this month.

Shaqiri has not featured in any of Liverpool’s three games since, though, and there is currently a bit of speculation surrounding his future.

On Wednesday afternoon, Liverpool’s official Twitter account posted a video of Sadio Mane, Joel Matip and Shaqiri showcasing their skills.

And the footage led to a number of the Merseyside club’s fans showing their support for Shaqiri, with many using the hashtag #FreeShaq.

It will certainly be interesting to see whether the Switzerland international plays any part in this weekend’s huge Premier League game against Arsenal.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the club’s fans can be seen below:

Manchester United swoop for Jadon Sancho in January could decide top four hopes

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Having lit the Bundesliga alight since his arrival from Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho continues to be linked with a return to the glitz and glam of the Premier League.

The England international has started the current campaign on fire with two goals and two assists in his first three matches, and that has understandably kicked the ‘Sancho to the Premier League’ rumours into overdrive once more.

The Sun claim the 19-year-old is Manchester United’s “top transfer target” in the January transfer window, and the Dortmund ace is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s main priority.

The report claims that despite Sancho agreeing bumper new deal with Dortmund, United still hope to bring him to English football mid-way through the campaign in a bid to “avoid the massive revenue plunge” of missing out on Champions League football.

Make no mistake, landing the wing wizard in the winter transfer window would make the Red Devils strong contenders for the top four and the riches that come with it.

Despite Daniel James’ goal-scoring start to his Old Trafford career against Chelsea, his rawness seemed evident in the clash against Wolves at Molineux. The Welshman struggled to impose himself on the game and suffered with a lack of space to run into. Sancho on the other hand, has shown his adeptness at thriving in tight spaces, averaging an impressive 3.3 dribbles per game last season.

More than his explosive pace, the former City star would add a sense of dynamism and fear that is missing from United’s current squad. Looking around at Solskjaer’s side, are there any players opposition defenders would lose sleep over? Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford perhaps, but Sancho’s repertoire of skills and trickery make him a full-back’s nightmare and his versatility to play on both the left and right flanks simply adds to the options the United boss has.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Taking his incredible end product and putting it into the United side would add the amount of goals the Red Devils would need to charge into the top four. If teams decide to double up on Sancho, then the likes of Rashford and Martial would have even more space to weave their magic.

For all of United’s struggles last season, they weren’t too far off from clinching a shock top four place by the end of the campaign. Adding Sancho in January would be the sprinkle of stardust, and more importantly, goals, that could propel them back into the promised land.

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen reaffirms commitment to club

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Jan Vertonghen has denied that fitness issues were behind his absence from the Tottenham Hotspur team but has reaffirmed his commitment to the club, per The London Evening Standard.

What’s he said?

The Belgium international played for Spurs for the first time this term on Sunday in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

He was not even included in the squad for the opening game of the season, against Aston Villa, and The Daily Mail claimed that his omission came from a lack of fitness at the beginning of pre-season.

Vertonghen has now denied that, though, and says he is fully focused on helping Spurs win their first major trophy since 2008.

He said: “No, no, no – I came back fit. I played in every pre-season game and I didn’t miss a [training] session.

“Like the manager explained before the first game against Villa, it was a tactical decision and I respect that decision. We players have to accept his decisions. I’m very, very happy to be back.”

He added, when asked if he could sign a new contract soon: “No. I just want to focus on football now.

“When you don’t play, you realise how important it is and it’s extremely important for me. I’ve been so long with the guys, I love the club and I just want to play as much as I can.

“I feel great and I just want to help the club to win trophies.”

Reassurance

This is good news from Vertonghen.

Whatever the reasons for his absence, he has respected Mauricio Pochettino’s decisions, all the while reaffirming his commitment to Spurs.

His contract expires at the end of the season and one feels that talks will have to get underway swiftly to ensure that he remains in north London.

But these quotes suggest that he is as committed as ever to the club.

With Spurs attempting to grow and take the next step towards actually lifting silverware, that can only be a good thing.

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler defends Mo Salah following greediness claim

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Robbie Fowler believes that accusations claiming Mo Salah is greedy are “nonsense” and rubbished the idea of there being a spat between the two.

What did he say?

The falling out between Salah and Sadio Mane against Burnley has reached a level of infamy which has led to a whole host of people sharing their opinion on the matter, despite Jurgen Klopp stating there was no issue between the pair shortly after the match ended.

The duo have started the season in fine form and but for an international break would have likely displayed their co-operation and togetherness whilst playing for the Reds.

Former Liverpool striker Fowler has weighed in, too, suggesting that Salah’s ‘selfishness’ is a reason why he scores so many, describing it as a trait he had in his playing days and as something which is common amongst natural goalscorers.

Writing in The Mirror, Fowler said: “It’s the noise surrounding Mane and Salah that I can’t believe.

“Everyone commenting and talking nonsense about being “greedy” or destroying team spirit, have they never watched football before?

“You don’t score that many goals without being what people say is selfish. But what do people want? Yes, Salah can be selfish when he sees the goal, but, to me, that makes him a great goalscorer.”

The Egyptian’s record speaks for itself, with 74 goals in 110 matches for the Anfield outfit. Accusations of jealousy are therefore unlikely to have much of an effect, and Klopp and the fans will be more than happy if he continues to perform at his current level.

Part of his magic

As Fowler suggests, all brilliant goalscorers have a level of selfishness about them, and without it they wouldn’t score some of the brilliant goals they do.

Since arriving at Anfield, Salah has produced the same, with memorable solo goals at Anfield against Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton all standing out, but goals that never would have been scored if not for Salah’s selfishness and total belief that he had the ability to pull it off.

To alter that would be of detriment to Liverpool, taking away Salah’s unpredictability which makes him, and his forward partners, such an attacking threat.

Mane, too, plays in a similar fashion. He has fewer assists than Salah in a Liverpool shirt despite arriving a year earlier and yet both are European champions with the club, which shows they’re doing something right.

England fans want Jadon Sancho to start against Kosovo

[ad_pod ]

England maintained their 100% record in Euro 2020 qualifying on Saturday evening with a 4-0 drubbing of Bulgaria at Wembley thanks to a Harry Kane hat-trick and a goal from Raheem Sterling.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate left some of his exciting youngsters on the bench for this fixture, with Mason Mount and Jadon Sancho both only managing substitute minutes on the pitch in the second half.

Such decisions from the popular 49-year-old have left a number of fans debating the team ahead of Tuesday’s top of the table clash with Kosovo, who too are unbeaten in Group A.

Three Lions or Super Eagles? Watch the video below for the important decision facing Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham…

One man they are hoping to see start the match at Southampton’s St Mary’s on Tuesday is indeed the Borussia Dortmund star.

The 19-year-old has now picked up seven senior caps for England and could well be one of the first names on the teamsheet at next summer’s tournament should England continue to impress in the qualifying round.

Aston Villa fans criticise Jota’s display in West Ham draw

[ad_pod ]

It would be fair to say that the Aston Villa fans were not best pleased with what they saw from Jota in Monday night’s Premier League clash with West Ham United.

The 28-year-old, who moved to Villa Park from Birmingham City during the summer, was handed his third straight league start against West Ham having come off the bench against Tottenham Hotspur and Bournemouth earlier this season.

Jota was once again deployed on the right for Dean Smith’s side, but his statistics for the night do not exactly make brilliant reading.

Indeed, according to WhoScored, the attacker managed just one shot, one dribble and made just 15 passes before being replaced in the 66th minute.

Villa are now languishing just outside the relegation zone in the Premier League table after a tough start to the 2019/20 campaign.

And a number of the club’s fans were really not pleased with Jota’s outing against Manuel Pellegrini’s side – as shown by the tweets below:

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher sees the positives in Napoli defeat

[ad_pod ]Liverpool fans may be feeling a bit down after watching their team lose 2-0 to Napoli in their Champions League opener, but it’s not all doom and gloom. If any Reds supporter needs a little boost to their mood after their defeat on Tuesday, they should just read Jamie Carragher’s thoughts on the match.

The Anfield legend took a number of positives from the game at the Stadio San Paolo and shared his thoughts on Twitter.

To be fair, it’s hard to argue with Carragher on a number of his points. The game against Napoli this week should represent the hardest game in the group stages, as Liverpool have also been drawn alongside Red Bull Salzburg and Genk, and Adrian’s save was indeed incredible.

Perhaps it’s not as bad as it seems, and Liverpool fans will have had their nerves calmed a bit by Carragher’s tweet.

It remains to be seen how the Reds will get on in the Champions League for the rest of the campaign, but the Sky Sports pundit certainly believes that there were positives to take away from their first game.

Crystal Palace have been made to rue Christian Benteke’s personal transfer stance

[ad_pod ]

“I don’t want to leave like a thief.”

These were the words of Christian Benteke amid concrete interest in his services from China back in the summer, with the Belgian striker determined to stay at Crystal Palace and put his terrible form right.

In making this decision, however, Benteke has placed the Eagles in a position they should now rue, and even more so after his last outing against Wolves.

The former Aston Villa and Liverpool man had the chance to secure all three points against Wolves when one on one with Rui Patricio, but he delayed his shot for what seemed like an age before firing straight at the Portugal international. Diogo Jota’s late equaliser just moments later underlined quite how detrimental his ineffectiveness in front of goal is proving to be.

When the full-time whistle sounded, it signalled Benteke’s 57th game in all competitions since his 17-goal campaign back in the 2016/17 season.

In those 57 games since, he has just four goals.

We recently argued that Roy Hodgson’s arrival and the subsequent decrease in the number of crosses going into the box have contributed to Benteke’s downfall.

Whether one is inclined to agree with the compelling case or not is a matter of personal opinion, but one thing is for certain: the Eagles should be ruing the forward’s summer decision under the circumstances.

Benteke told Walfoot about his plans to stay in England and spurn the Chinese Super League’s advances back in the summer, although the decision – amid his contract situation – makes the dilemma even worse.

“After a good season, the last two have been very complicated. I still have a contract at Crystal Palace and I plan on honouring it.

“The club have been very correct with me and I don’t want to leave like a thief. China has never been an option.

“The Premier League is my dream and I still want to live it.”

You cannot begrudge the 28-year-old for making such a decision, but it isn’t ideal.

Benteke’s contract expires in less than 12 months, leaving Palace looking likely to lose an attacker who cost the club £27m for nothing, unless they hand him a contract extension, which of course would not be a unanimously popular decision.

Should the south Londoners extend Benteke’s deal, they would still have to pay a significant wage if his current salary of £130k-a-week is any indication of his financial expectations.

Four goals in 57 is unacceptable. It is unacceptable for a striker who cost £1m, let alone one who cost 27 times that.

If he had been inclined to accept Shandong Luneng Taishan’s offer worth £15m to Palace and £8m-a-year to the striker himself, then the Eagles would have been able to offload a misfiring player who has been bleeding them of their resources ever since the conclusion of an impressive debut season.

His departure, in turn, would have also handed the Eagles’ transfer kitty a boost, funds which don’t seem to be there at the present moment – much to Hodgson’s envy of sides around him.

As aforesaid, you can’t begrudge Benteke for choosing to stay in London – he is being paid well and also has a young family to focus on.

/Biur_tVDvqm/

From a footballing perspective over a personal one, though, the Belgium international’s decision is looking to be a real problem for Palace given what they could have had if he accepted the proposal.

Money in the bank and an unjustly lucrative earner off the wage bill.

Contrastingly, the Eagles now look to be stuck with a man whose confidence in front of goal is on the floor, and one who will see them record a huge loss on their record signing given his contract situation.

Undoubtedly, Palace have been made to rue Benteke’s rejection of his £15m summer opportunity and, judging by the early openings of the season, it looks like he will be leaving as a thief after all.

West Ham’s Andriy Yarmolenko is proving to be a bargain with goalscoring form

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

The signing of Andriy Yarmolenko is proving better and better with each passing game, and he has started to produce after being ruled out for almost the entirety of last season with an Achilles injury.

Over the last few years players such as Felipe Anderson, Manuel Lanzini and Dimitri Payet have grabbed most of the headlines, but the Hammers now appear to have another positive wide player, and if the former Borussia Dortmund player can maintain his early-season form then West Ham could be in for a successful season.

The Ukranian has scored three goals from his six Premier League games, but such is his form that he will likely keep Michail Antonio out of the starting line-up when he makes a return from injury.

Watch West Ham United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

To make matters even better, West Ham only spent £17.5m on him in summer 2018, and given the current climate in which Declan Rice has an asking price of £100m, that can be considered a very good deal.

His form hasn’t gone unnoticed from pundits, too. Darren Bent’s comments to Football Insider show that he has particularly been impressed since the start of the season.

“I saw that Yarmolenko a few years back and I remember thinking: ‘Who is this guy? What a player he is.

“Since he’s been fit, he’s been good, his finish at the weekend was brilliant.”

– Darren Bent

Alongside Lanzini and Anderson, the trio playing behind Sebastien Haller offer West Ham significant threat and variety in attack, evidenced by the fact they have scored two or more goals in four league games so far.

Given their success in attack it is little surprise that the Hammers have lost just once this season, and having been criticised for many years for poor recruitment and not spending money, David Gold and David Sullivan deserve plaudits for their backing of Pellegrini.

It is positive to see the Ukraine international make such a positive return after so long out, and he seems to have adapted very well into the current West Ham set-up, taking up great positions in the box and acting as the perfect support for Haller, who so has the same record in front of goal.
