Opener Devon Smith smashed a ruthless 63 off just 36 balls with eight fours and two sixes, while Kirk Edwards assisted him in a 61-run stand with 45 off 52. Darren Bravo, in terrific form this series, continued his good run, finishing unbeaten on 62 to see his team through with ease.West Indies take on South Africa A in the final on May 14.

West Brom fans respond to Daryl Dike tweet

A number of West Brom supporters have been responding to Daryl Dike’s first tweet as a Baggies player following his permanent move from Orlando City.

The 21-year-old officially became a West Brom player on New Year’s Day, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal at The Hawthorns.

Valerien Ismael had been pushing hard to get his man following a successful loan spell at Barnsley during their mutual time at Oakwell last season, when the striker scored nine goals in 22 appearances.

It is an exciting coup for the Baggies and the hope is that it will help give them a further boost in their quest for promotion from the Championship this season, with Ismael’s side currently fourth in the table.

Allround Smith puts Lancashire ahead

Yorkshire recovered somewhat from 55 for 5 but at 199 for 8 still trail by 217 runs, needing 68 more to avoid the follow-on

Jon Culley at Headingley31-May-2010
ScorecardTom Smith had a day to remember following a century with four wickets•Getty ImagesHaving cursed the weather when day one of the 250th Roses match was lost to rain, Yorkshire may be less than disappointed if the final day brings more of the same after a dry but otherwise miserable third day for the home side left Lancashire firmly in control.Yorkshire recovered somewhat from 55 for 5 but at 199 for 8 still trail by 217 runs, needing 68 more to avoid the follow-on. Their imperilled position owes much to the Lancashire allrounder, Tom Smith, who scored a career-best 108 not out, then took four wickets as he continued a habit of saving his best for Roses matches. The 24-year-old from Liverpool returned career-best bowling figures of 6 for 46 as Yorkshire were bowled out for 181 when the rivals met at Old Trafford last July, going on to share a 107-run opening partnership with Paul Horton, setting Lancashire up for a mammoth total. Those six wickets doubled his tally for the season and there were parallels of a kind on this occasion, the first Championship century of his career coming after a woeful run of scores with the bat. In eight innings before this one, he had accumulated only 31 runs in total, yet put all of that behind him in a chanceless performance, spiced by some lovely strokes on both sides of the wicket, eclipsing the 104 he made against Durham University last season as his best first-class score. Some days, clearly, everything works in harmony and the confidence drawn from one part of his game falling into place spills over into the other discipline. This was one such day. Introduced at first change in a four-man seam attack, his first eight-over spell included a run of three wickets for four runs in 37 balls as sorry Yorkshire’s reply to Lancashire’s 419 for 9 declared crumbled to 55 for 5.The Lancashire charge was halted for a while as Adil Rashid tried to organise a salvage operation. The leg-spinning allrounder had Jonathan Bairstow for company in a stand of 74 in 19 overs but their partnership ended when the young wicketkeeper paid the price for inexperience and a touch of impetuosity. Having hit left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan for six over long-on, he tried to despatch the next delivery in the same way but did not get it quite right and with the irrepressible Smith running around from long-off there was only going to be one outcome, even if the ball did momentarily bounce out of his grasp before he completed the catch.Rashid, having hit seven fours in reaching 51 off 85 balls, picked up a couple more but then Smith began his second spell and pinned him leg before for 65. The last wicket before the close was a give-away, Tino Best blasting the ball straight to Kyle Hogg at mid-off to give Kerrigan a second success.Smith, 46 overnight, must by now have convinced Lancashire that he is not the right man to open the batting, a role he was given last season as Lancashire sought a way to find the desired balance of batters and bowlers, and has struggled with again this year. Back in more comfortable territory at six, he succeeded where his top-order team-mates had failed in turning a solid start into a substantial score.Lancashire’s day did not begin too well, Luke Sutton lasting just three balls before Glen Chapple was dropped on the boundary, having scored only a single. But Smith’s first boundary of the day, driven firmly through the off side from a short ball by Ajmal Shahzad, took him to a half-century off 90 balls and it was with an authoritative pull to the ropes from a Joe Sayers full toss that he moved into three figures from 158 deliveries, with 10 fours.Lancashire added 144 in the morning session, although not quickly enough to gain more than one extra batting point. They were thwarted in that ambition when Chapple, drawn down the track by Rashid, was stumped just when he seemed to be finding his range. After a lunchtime declaration, it was Chapple who drew first blood with the ball for Lancashire, ending Adam Lyth’s hopes of becoming only the third batsman since the War to score 1,000 first-class runs by the end of May. The left-hander has made brisk starts his trademark this season but when he set himself to drive Chapple’s second ball through the covers he succeeded only in directing it on to his stumps via an inside edge.Chapple landed another serious blow in his second over, nipping one back to have Anthony McGrath leg before, seeing off another batsman who has been in sparkling form. Saj Mahmood had half a dozen overs without success at the Kirkstall Lane end, but when he gave way to Smith, Yorkshire lurched back into trouble, rapidly sliding from 40 for 2 to 55 for 3. Smith trapped Sayers in front with his third ball, then had Andrew Gale edging to second slip and Jacques Rudolph caught behind, the South African nibbling at an excellent ball that left him late.Shahzad battled well in the final half hour and resumes on 38 not out but it would be a surprise if Yorkshire are not batting for a second time within the first hour of the last morning, unless of course the weather has had another say.

West Ham interested in Abdou Diallo

West Ham United are interested in a deal to bring Abdou Diallo to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by French publication L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), who claim that David Moyes has identified the Paris Saint-Germain centre-back as one of his primary targets in the winter market, as the West Ham boss looks to bring in greater depth in the heart of his defence following the injuries to both Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma.

The report goes on to state that, at present, the Hammers have not yet made an offer for the versatile defender, however, with further reports suggesting that Newcastle United are set to make a bid of around £10m for West Ham’s Issa Diop, it is claimed that the 58-year-old is very much in need of a new addition in the position at the London Stadium.

Bye-bye Diop

While Diop is undoubtedly a decent backup option to the likes of Zouma, Ogbonna and even Aaron Cresswell in the West Ham centre-back pecking order, the 24-year-old has somewhat proven during his recent spell in the side that he is not quite up to the standards required to be a regular in Moyes’ starting XI.

Indeed, over his six Premier League appearances in the absence of the aforementioned defensive trio, the £10.8m-rated Frenchman has been in disappointing form, helping the Hammers keep just one clean sheet, as well as making an average of just 0.7 interceptions, one tackle, 2.8 clearances and winning a mere 2.3 duels per game.

These returns have seen the £61k-per-week defender average an extremely poor SofaScore match rating of 6.57, ranking him as Moyes’ second-worst performer in the top flight of English football.

Meanwhile, over Diallo’s nine Ligue 1 appearances in the current campaign, the £22.5m-rated centre-back – who is also more than comfortable operating at left-back – has helped his side keep three clean sheets, registered one assist and created one big chance for his teammates, in addition to making an average of 1.1 interceptions, 2.1 tackles, 1.1 clearances and winning 5.1 duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the £92k-per-week defender who Rouven Schroder dubbed a “determined” player average a much more impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.96, ranking him as Mauricio Pochettino’s joint-16th best player in the French top flight.

As such, should Newcastle indeed submit a £10m offer for Diop this winter, it would appear extremely wise for Moyes to cash in on the 24-year-old, before reinvesting this money into the signing of the 6ft2 Diallo – whom PSG are reportedly demanding around €25m (£21m) to part with in January.

Mohammad Aamer runs through Kent

Pakistan’s teenage pace sensation Mohammad Aamer made the most of ideal swing-bowling conditions in Canterbury to bag 5 for 54

Mark Pennell at Canterbury29-Jun-2010
ScorecardPakistan’s teenage pace sensation Mohammad Aamer made the most of ideal swing-bowling conditions in Canterbury to bag 5 for 54 as the tourists dismissed hosts Kent for 259 inside 69 overs. By stumps, Pakistan reached 86 for 1 in their second innings for an overall lead of 187, this after 18-year-old Aamer had taken a lead role in dismissing a rookie county side in under three-and-a-half hours.Though Aamer has only eight Test caps to his name and 21-first-class appearances behind him, he exploited hot, humid conditions in the first two sessions to cause havoc amongst the home top-order batting. Bowling his slippery left-arm pace from the Nackington Road End and down the St Lawrence slope, Aamer seemingly swung the ball at will and also nipped it around off the seam to create headaches galore. In the face of Pakistan’s impressive new ball burst from Umar Gul in tandem with Aamer, Kent slid to 33 for 4 only to fight back with half-centuries from Joe Denly and James Goodman, who hit 59 on his first-class debut. It helped Pakistan’s cause that heavy rain fell over Kent an hour before the scheduled start, leading to a 30-minute delay and high humidity once the match got underway at 11am.Both Denly and night watchman Matt Coles were fortunate to survive the first five overs, riding their luck the pair somehow posted 31 before Coles pushed inside the line of an Aamer out-swinger to lose his off stump and spark the loss of four wickets for two runs in the space of 14 deliveries. Two balls later Chris Piesley, another first-class debutant, pushed at one from Aamer that left him and brushed the outside edge low to second slip. He went without troubling the scorers. In the next over, Gul rushed one through Alex Blake’s gate to knock back off stump, then Aamer nipped one back off the seam to hit the base of James Hockley’s off stump as Kent lost four wickets for two runs in the space of 14 deliveries.Kent re-grouped either side of lunch with a fifth-wicket stand worth 89 in 20 overs between Denly and Goodman. Denly, who edged through and over the slips during his fortuitous 77-ball stay, reached 50 from only 60 balls while Goodman followed him to the milestone from 111 balls and with five fours. The tourists regained their grip on proceedings soon after lunch when Aamer cleaned up Denly with a fast, full one, then former Pakistan Test allrounder Azhar Mahmood went for 28, spooning a pull shot against Gul to deep square-leg.The impressive Wahab Riaz, a muscular ‘hit-the-deck’ style of seamer who might well revel on English pitches, bowled Goodman off an inside edge then Aamer returned for a third spell to send back Paul Dixey to another catch in the cordon that completed his five-wicket haul.Though Kent’s tail wagged through Mark Lawson (31) and Robbie Joseph (18*), offspinner Shoaib Malik came on to polish the innings off with a tidy stint of 2 for 27 that helped secure a first innings lead of 101.

'Srinivasan's response a mockery of rule of law' – Modi

Modi dismissed Srinivasan’s response as illegal, for it was, according to him, a private decision and not one taken by the board

Cricinfo staff24-Jun-2010Lalit Modi, the suspended IPL chairman, has lashed out against N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, who rejected the replies filed by Modi to the three show-causes notices issued by the Indian board. Modi dismissed Srinivasan’s response as illegal, for it was, according to him, a private decision and not one taken by the board. He has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Srinivasan, demanding him to “recall” his views, inform the board that the views were his own and that the board, and not him, would decide the way forward. Modi also reiterated his demand that Srinivasan, like the BCCI president Shashank Manohar, recuse himself from the disciplinary committee that will consider the case against him.”I wish to make it absolutely clear that I do not accept the legality of any of your suggestions, findings or recommendations,” Modi said in his letter, a copy of which is available with Cricinfo. “The decision contained in the said document appears to be your private decision and is not an institutional decision of or on behalf of, the Board. Any reference, by you, to the Board, of your private decision is and will be, wholly un-constitutional, illegal and null and void ab-initio.While responding to the first show-cause, on May 15, Modi had asked the IPL governing council to remove Manohar and Srinivasan from all proceedings involving the charges filed against him, and instead constitute an independent panel to adjudicate on the matter. Modi had accused Srinivasan of misusing his position as board secretary to benefit the team he owns, Chennai Super Kings, and added there was enough reason to be apprehensive of bias on Srinivasan’s part. While criticising Srinivasan’s involvement in the proceedings, given Modi’s allegations against him, Modi also questioned the legality of the board secretary taking the decision on his own.”I dare say that what is even more disturbing is that despite the Honorary President having rescued himself, you have chosen to decide the matter. Please confirm under which provision of the BCCI constitution, you have done so.”The three show-cause notices had contained charges of irregularities in the bidding process, broadcast rights and theatrical rights among others. Modi filed detailed responses to the three, including a reply that ran into 15,000 pages for the first notice.Modi accused Srinivasan of showing malice, pre-empting the board’s response by substituting them with his own. The replies filed for the show-cause notices, Modi said, ought to have been circulated to the “General Body” to arrive at a collective decision but Srinivasan had chosen to act on them independently.”It has also become absolutely clear that as far as you are concerned you are acting out of malice. Further, it is obvious that if any inquiry is warranted, it should be into your conduct rather than into the meaningless trumped up allegations levelled in the Show Cause Notice, and to safeguard your position you have taken this ridiculous step of giving your decision as it were, which is a mockery not only of the BCCI constitution but also of the rule of law,” Modi said.”I regret to have to observe that your actions have completely deprived these proceedings of even a semblance of credibility. The fact that the Secretary of the BCCI has, in a manner involving such immense public scrutiny and interest as the present, chosen to act in such a fashion, threatens to potentially undermine the fair name of the BCCI itself.”Srinivasan has passed his findings to the members of the general body for ratification at the Special General Meeting, (SGM) scheduled for July 3, when a decision on Modi’s future will be taken.

Newcastle transfer news on Carlos

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle United will now ‘push again’ to try and sign Diego Carlos in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Getting closer?

Speaking on Thursday’s edition of Sky Sports’ The Transfer Show, journalist Kaveh Solhekol revealed (via Sky Sports’ The Transfer Centre) live on TV (17:05pm) that Sevilla would like to keep Carlos for their weekend game against Celta Vigo, and then a deal could potentially be done after.

This story has not stopped since the window opened, and so with just over a week left, it seems as if the Magpies have put all their eggs firmly into the basket of bringing Carlos to St. James’ Park.

The Latest: Romano update

Writing on his official Twitter page, Italian football journalist and transfer expert Romano has now dropped an update on the situation, revealing the player himself is keen and ‘waiting’.

“Newcastle will push again in the next hours for Diego Carlos.

“Sevilla are trying to resist in every way as they did for Kounde/Chelsea deal last summer – but Newcastle are willing to insist. Key hours ahead.

“Diego already agreed personal terms days ago. He’s waiting.”

The Verdict: Just do it

With the days ticking by, the North East club just need to sign Carlos now as soon as possible, so that they can integrate him into the team to be ready for the relegation battle ahead – it’s not as if there’s a whole host of alternative options queued up either.

Described as a ‘real leader at the back’ (The Daily Express) by European football expert Andy Brassell, ‘The Beast‘, as Carlos is appropriately nicknamed, is exactly the kind of personality that the Tyneside outfit need for the fight, and luring him away from Sevilla, who are currently second in La Liga, would be a real coup.

Nonetheless, at 28 years of age, the Brazilian is in his prime, and now is the time for the Toon to strike.

Leeds: David Anderson drops more transfer news

Leeds United have made a bid for a second player after their offer for RB Salzburg’s Brenden Aaronson, David Anderson reported late Tuesday evening.

The Lowdown: Aaronson bid

News emerged on Tuesday evening regarding Leeds’ move for Aaronson.

The Whites were linked with a move for the American before the January transfer window opened, however, it was believed then that Victor Orta wouldn’t be able to sign the 21-year-old this month due to Salzburg’s qualification into the last 16 of the Champions League.

Leeds have recently had an offer in the region of £15m rejected for Aaronson but remain intent on signing him before the end of the month.

The Latest: Anderson’s post

Anderson took to Twitter shortly after the news emerged of Leeds’ failed bid for Aaronson on Tuesday night.

The Daily Mirror man claimed that Orta is ‘busy’ and has made an official offer for a second unnamed player.

“Victor Orta is being busy and Leeds have also tabled a bid for a second as of yet unidentified player.”

The Verdict: Who could it be?

Orta was thought to be after a defensive and attacking midfielder this month, and with Aaronson the latter, you’d expect this unnamed second target could be a holding midfielder.

Bringing one in could be just as important as signing Aaronson, especially with Kalvin Phillips out until March and Adam Forshaw recently suffering a fresh injury against West Ham.

One player who has also been linked in recent days is Standard Liege’s Nicolas Raskin, but it seems as if the Whites are keeping quiet on this second offer – perhaps a return to Nahitan Nandez?

In other news: Positive Leeds injury claim regarding two players emerges.

Murali, Kumble plan spin-bowling academy

Anil Kumble and Muttiah Muralitharan could be soon working together in training young spinners

Cricinfo staff30-Jul-2010Anil Kumble and Muttiah Muralitharan could be soon working together in training young spinners. There are plans in place to set up a spin-bowling academy, possibly in Bangalore, and the two bowlers, who share 1419 Test wickets between them, have set their minds on the project.”It is in the pipeline, but it is Anil’s call as he is arranging things for setting up the academy in Bangalore,” Muralitharan, who retired after finishing with 800 wickets in Galle, told the . “If Anil does (set things up) I would like to be a part of it. I am not planning a career in coaching, but if Anil starts his academy I’ll be happy to go.”While Kumble isn’t yet certain about when the project will get underway, he confirmed the intention was very much there, having discussed it two years ago. “I have been in touch with Murali. However, I haven’t been able to speak to him after his retirement since he’s been busy with all the felicitations,” Kumble said. “Once he’s free we’ll sit down and plan things in detail.”
