Liverpool linked to Adama Traore

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Wolves winger Adama Traore as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his attacking options.

What’s the story?

The Midlands outfit are reportedly open to offers on a number of their key players as they look to rebuild the first-team squad following Nuno Espirito Santo’s exit.

And according to 90min.com, Jurgen Klopp’s charges are interested in acquiring Traore’s signature this summer, although they face stern competition from fellow Premier League outfit Leeds United.

Edwards must avoid

Following an £18m move from Middlesbrough to Molineux back in 2018, the Spain international has gone from strength to strength.

An impressive return of six goals and 12 assists in 54 appearances throughout 2019/20 appeared to indicate that Traore had taken another significant step in his development.

However, the 25-year-old struggled to make a similar impact in the recently concluded campaign as Wolves slumped to a disappointing 13th placed finish in the Premier League standings.

Although that can partly be explained by the extended absence of star striker Raul Jimenez, the likes of Traore are to blame following a significant drop-off in form.

The former Barcelona man found the back of the net on just two occasions last season, laying on a further two assists for his teammates.

With Liverpool thought to be in the market for a new forward player over the upcoming transfer window, director of football Michael Edwards must avoid the inconsistent Traore.

He’s proven himself to be a liability on occasions throughout his time in England, incapable of producing consistent displays on a regular basis.

Klopp needs competition and cover for Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino after the usually dependable duo struggled last term, but both men comfortably outperformed Traore even though they were way below their best.

Leeds United winger Raphinha has also been linked with a move to Anfield in recent weeks, and the Brazilian star appears to be a much more suitable candidate for the Reds.

The £27m-rated Traore may be a talented player ready for the next step in his career, but Liverpool would be making a mistake bringing him in over the coming months as they aim to regain their Premier League crown.

And, in other news…Edwards must sanction Liverpool swoop for “spectacular” 18 y/o lauded by Thiago

West Ham fans flock to Edouard claim

According to a report by Football Insider, West Ham United are now weighing up whether to reignite their interest in Odsonne Edouard, with many fans on Twitter flocking to the transfer claim.

Edouard, who bagged 22 goals in all competitions for Celtic last season, has attracted plenty of interest for his proficiency in finding the net.

At one point, Leicester City seemed favourites to secure his signature this summer and were in advanced talks to seal a deal at one point (Fabrizio Romano). However, with Patson Daka now looking likely to join the Foxes, that has seemingly opened the door for West Ham to return for Edouard, as Football Insider claimed that the Hammers are now weighing up a move for the 23-year-old.

Flocking to this transfer claim, many Irons fans had no shortage of opinions on social media, with the majority appearing excited. Given his 83 goals in four years for Celtic, it’s little wonder there was plenty of reaction.

'We have let ourselves down'says Shine as Cidermen are relegated

Somerset’s First Division fate was sealed at Grace Road today when they were convincingly beaten by Leicestershire with two days to spare in their county championship match

Richard Walsh13-Sep-2002Somerset’s First Division fate was sealed at Grace Road today when they were convincingly beaten by Leicestershire with two days to spare in their county championship match.Next year they will be playing in the Second Division, from where they will be looking to bounce back to the top flight as quickly as they can.Resuming on 207 for 5 the hosts took their score onto 310 before they were all out, with Richard Johnson, Matt Bulbeck and Pete Trego ending with three wickets each.Facing a deficit of 119 the Cidermen’s second innings got of to disastrous start, losing Jamie Cox with the score on 7 and Matt Wood 3 runs later.Worst was to follow as Indian paceman Javagal Srinath ripped the heart out of the top order batsman claiming five out of the first seven wickets to fall as the visitors collapsed to 42 for 7.Keith Dutch(not out 14) offered some late resistance and put on 25 for the eighth wicket with Bulbeck (18) however when Simon Francis was LBW to Darren Maddy after scoring 17, Somerset were all out for 101 and Leicestershire had won by an innings and 18 runs.At the end of the day Kevin Shine told me: "We are as disappointed as you can be in this situation because it is the end of three years of first division championship cricket for us and we don’t like it."He continued: "Today the momentum just went against us and we capitulated quite quickly. The boys are as down as I have ever seen them because after three years in the top flight they are a better side now than they ever have been and we have let ourselves down."

South Africa hold too many aces for Bangladesh

If the warm-up match against South Africa `A’ at Soweto was anything to go by, then Bangladesh is going to have plenty of problems against the South African bowling attack

Keith Lane02-Oct-2002If the warm-up match against South Africa `A’ at Soweto was anything to go by, then Bangladesh is going to have plenty of problems against the South African bowling attack. The first of three Standard Bank One-Day Internationals kicks off at Potchefstroom on Thursday 3 September 2002.Bangladesh struggled against the pace and lift from the South African “A” bowlers and should find it even more difficult on the fast Potchefstroom pitch. Shaun Pollock, a master in bowling at a length, and Jacques Kallis, who gets lift and swing out of most pitches, may have a field day.Add to that the experience of Allan Donald, the improving Lance Klusener, Makhaya Ntini and Mfuneko Ngam, whoever plays, then Bangladesh batsmen are in for a torrid time and a total of anything near 200 will be most surprising.Hannan Sarkar and Tushar Imran both good players who get into line well might cause the South Africans bowlers some irritation. Sanwar Hossain, who looks to be better suited to the five-day version, will not give his wicket away cheaply. It is expected that South Africa will go with a full pace attack after Bangladesh showed that they are quite capable of handling medium pace and are more than competent at playing any form of spin. The South African top order may find early opposition from the opening Bangladesh attack. Left hander Manjural Islam and Tapash Baisya make up for their lack in pace with consistent line and length. The leg spinner, Alok Kapali, who does not turn the ball much, does vary his flight and line very well. From what has been seen, Bangladesh will face an uphill battle with the remaining bowlers.Without being overconfident, Bangladesh should not create too many headaches for South African. They are in the country to learn about the South African conditions and pick up as much experience as they can before the World Cup early in 2003.For South Africa it will be a series that they will use as preparations for Sri Lanka and Pakistan who are visiting South Africa later in the year. It will be a time to iron out any problems and build towards the ultimate goal of winning the World Cup at home.

Liverpool fans react as new image emerges

A number of Liverpool fans have been reacting an image of work starting on expanding the Anfield Road end, with some taking a negative stance on the matter.

The Reds have enjoyed a glorious period in their history with Jurgen Klopp at the helm, winning both the Premier League and Champions League.

The 54-year-old has transformed matters on the pitch, building a wonderful team and proving to be one of the biggest figures in the club’s history.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

Liverpool have also continued to thrive off the pitch, however, with FSG overseeing the expansion of the Main Stand, which is now a towering part of Anfield.

Next up is the Anfield Road end, in a venture that will see the stadium’s capacity further increase and see more revenue generated on matchdays.

A new image provided by Watch LFC on Twitter has shown work getting underway on the expansion, as a busy summer awaits for those working on it.

Jayasuriya asks team to show their natural flair in Test series

Skipper Sanath Jayasuriya called upon his exuberant team to play theirnatural game as Sri Lanka strive to win their first ever Test series againstSouth Africa during the next two weeks

Charlie Austin07-Nov-2002Skipper Sanath Jayasuriya called upon his exuberant team to play theirnatural game as Sri Lanka strive to win their first ever Test series againstSouth Africa during the next two weeks. The two sides meet on Friday at the magnificent Wanderers Stadium inJohannesburg for the first of two Tests with the odds stacked heavily infavour of Shaun Pollock’s side.Sri Lanka have only one solitary victory in 12 attempts against SouthAfrica. Moreover, they have an appalling overall Test record outside thesub-continent with only three wins in two decades.Conditions are expected to favour South Africa with plenty of pace andbounce in the pitch set to assist the home side’s battery of seam bowlers. But Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s most successful captain in history, who has ledhis side to 13 wins in their last 16 matches, is confident that his side canprosper if they play to their strengths.”It is going to be very hard work winning here in South Africa but ourpreparation has been good and we can win. To do so, whether there is extrabounce or not, we have play our natural game,” said Jayasuriya.Sri Lanka have started well, particularly the batsmen who have all spentvaluable time at the crease during the two warm-up games at Kimberly andLenasia.”The boys have been trying hard to adapt to South Africa conditions and wehave made maximum use of our two practice matches,” said Jayasuriya.”All the batsmen have spent time at the crease and every one is looking goodat the moment – we now have to continue that in the middle during the Testmatch.””We have to perform in every department of the game if we are going to win.We have to take all the half chances that are offered.”Crucially, the batsmen are going to have to spend a lot of time at thecrease – if we get the runs then the bowlers can do the job.”Coach Dav Whatmore was equally upbeat, clearly delighted with the mannerthat the side have adapted to conditions thus far.”In the three years that I have been in charge this is probably the bestpreparation that we have had,” said Whatmore. “We will have to wait and seewhether this translates into performance in the Tests but I think we are onthe right track.”Sri Lanka are also free of the injuries that had plagued their last Testtour to England, exposing their lack of depth in the bowling department. This makes selection a near formality. The top six pick themselves withall-rounder Hasantha Fernando making his debut at number seven and a quartetof specialist bowlers that includes Chaminda Vaas, Dilhara Fernando, RuchiraPerera and off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan.Perera will be playing his first game since being reported for having asuspect bowling action during the first Test at Lord’s.Despite conditions that are expected to favour the fast bowlers Whatmorebelieves that Muralitharan, who has a fantastic record against South Africawith 70 wickets at 21.37 from 10 games, will still prove a handful.”Like batsmen, bowlers have to perform in all conditions and this is achallenge for Murali, who like any champion bowler thrives on hard work,”said Whatmore. However, Whatmore believes that it’s essential for the fast bowlers to playtheir part: “We have been spoilt with a bowler like Murali but fast bowlersalso have to share the workload and perform if we are going to win thegame.”Russel Arnold will open the batting with the inform Marvan Atapattu afterscoring a painstaking 98 in the second innings against a ‘Rest of SouthAfrica’ side at Lenasia. Jayasuriya will bat at number five.Final Eleven:Sanath Jayasuriya (Capt), Marvan Atapattu, Russel Arnold, Kumar Sangakkara,Mahela Jaywardene, Hashan Tillakaratne, Hasantha Fernando, Chaminda Vaas,Dilhara Fernando, Ruchira Perera, Muttiah Muralitharan.

Tottenham Hotspur: Toby Alderweireld makes shock decision

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld is hopeful of leaving the club this summer, according to a recent report from The Athletic.

The lowdown: ‘Phenomenal’ servant

Alderweireld has been with Spurs since 2015, and has gone on to make 236 appearances in total for the club over the years, which includes 35 appearances in the 2020/21 season, as they finished seventh in the Premier League in a frustrating campaign for the club’s supporters

Speaking in an interview with Football Insider back in December 2020, former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan labelled the Belgium international as a ‘phenomenal player’ and the club’s best defender.

“Alderweireld is the best defender at that club. He’s a phenomenal player and it’s great to see him playing so well again.”

Alderweireld’s contract with Spurs is set to expire in the summer of 2023, but it now looks as though he won’t see out that deal.

The latest: Alderweireld makes decision on his Spurs future

The Athletic report that Alderweireld has set his sights on a summer move away from Spurs, and he’s confident that a move can be completed after the European Championships.

It’s also claimed that Tottenham are unlikely to stand in his way over a potential exit either, with a rebuild likely to be in place for newly-appointed manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Alderweireld is currently on international duty with Belgium though, and there won’t be any move taking place in the immediate future, with Roberto Martinez’s side set to take on Italy on Friday evening in their quarter-final clash at Euro 2020.

The verdict: A frustrating update for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side

He’s likely to leave a sizeable void in the Spurs defence if his departure was confirmed this summer.

Alderweireld has been a fantastic servant to the club over the years, having signed from Atlético Madrid back in 2015, whilst they were under the management of Mauricio Pochettino.

It will be a summer of change at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium though, with newly-appointed Nuno looking to add some his own players who are better suited to his system.

At the age of 32, some Spurs supporters might argue that Alderweireld has still got something to offer them this term though, and his experience playing in a back three with Belgium would certainly suggest he can thrive under Nuno’s preferred system.

TEST DEBUT: Anticipated 9-13 November 2002, against Pakistan, at Harare Sports Club
ODI DEBUT: Still awaited

BIOGRAPHY (updated November 2002)The surprise selection of Blessing Mahwire for the First Test match against Pakistan in November 2002 was the latest step in the player’s meteoric rise to prominence. He had a useful but not outstanding debut season for the CFX Academy in 2001/02, after which he was posted to Manicaland for the remaining two years of his initial contract. He did not even win selection for the Manicaland first team at the start of the 2002/03 Logan Cup season, but played instead in the B Division for Manicaland B against a strong Mashonaland B team. He took two expensive wickets, but with the bat scored 99 and 80 to win a place in the senior side for the second round. This time he succeeded with the ball, taking nine wickets in the match, while his crucial 38 in the second innings played a major part in a two-wicket victory over Midlands. After another five wickets against Matabeleland in the third match, Blessing was selected in the Zimbabwe squad for the First Test against Pakistan, and later named in the team to make his Test debut at Harare Sports Club. He will then become the first player from the minor province of Masvingo to represent Zimbabwe at full international level. The emergence of Blessing as a promising cricketer is notable, not simply because he is a black player who could become a genuine all-rounder but also because he comes from Masvingo, a province where cricketing roots are still quite shallow. Like other black players, his parents had no real knowledge of the game, but he does have the advantage of an older brother who played.Blessing feels that his love of the game stems from school rather than his brother, though. He attended Ellen McGhie primary school in Masvingo, where Lazarus Zizhou, the coach, introduced him to cricket at the age of ten. He developed first as a batsman in his school team and progressed to the provincial primary schools team, which was also coached by Mr Zizhou. His best score at junior school was 80 not out against Chikato School, and for Masvingo in the national primary schools cricket week scored 48 against Mashonaland. He moved on to Victoria High School where he was quickly recognized as a player of great potential. He was promoted to the school first team in his first year at the school and therefore spent six years in that side, captaining the team for most of that time. It must be admitted, though, that the standard of cricket at the school and of the opponents they played was not high, and Blessing’s record therefore inevitably flatters him to some extent. In 1996, when in Form Two, he also decided to begin bowling seriously, no doubt due in part at least to the weakness of his school team in that department. He has always been a seam bowler and by the following year had done well enough to be selected for the national Under-16 team as an all-rounder. He was also to play for the national Under-19 team in his final year. The teams went to the South African weeks in Durban and Bloemfontein respectively. His highest score for his school was 154 against Mount Pleasant in Harare in 1998. He believes he scored 13 or 14 centuries for his school altogether. His best bowling figures were seven wickets for seven runs in four overs against Mutare Boys High. In most matches, though, he played weak opposition, but nevertheless showed the skill and determination to amass large scores. He pays tribute to coach Bruce Makovah who helped him especially with his batting, and to Joshua Paul, who helped him with the mental side of the game. He developed such a love of the game that without undue prompting from others he applied and was accepted for the CFX Academy in 2001.Blessing started playing cricket for Masvingo Sports Club in 1996, although success came slowly at club level where he rarely bowled. He has also played for Old Victorians, for whom he scored two centuries just before joining the Academy, and has now joined Universals in Harare. Number three is his favoured batting position, which he kept throughout his school career.Coming to the big city, he was not able to dominate the cricket scene as he did in Masvingo and played for the Academy in the lower middle order more as a bits-and-pieces player. He took time to adjust to the stronger opposition. As a batsman he prefers the drive, off either foot, while with the ball he moves the ball predominantly into the bat, in the air and off the pitch. He can field in the slips but has often been used by the Academy at short leg.”It was of benefit to me all round,” he says of his Academy year in 2001. “I became a better fielder, better batsman, better bowler. I’m happy with my batting especially. Now I approach it more professionally, and in a match I have plans about what I am going to do and I set myself standards.” In the national league his highest score to date is 98 for Universals against Macdonald Club of Bulawayo, in the 2001/02 season. When his Academy year had finished, he wished to return to Masvingo to play and coach there, but the infrastructure was not yet in place, so instead he successfully applied to stay in Mashonaland, for a year at least. The local Masvingo club was still in the third league and Logan Cup status was not granted until 2002/03, and he wanted to maintain his standard of play at the highest level possible. However, due to the surplus of top players in Mashonaland, he was seconded to Manicaland for the Logan Cup competition for 2002/03. He aims to return to Masvingo in the future, ‘putting Masvingo cricket on the map’, as he says. He does at present still coach in Masvingo.Although he considers himself to be more of a batsman who bowls, he was batted low in the order in the Mashonaland team and the Zimbabwe Board XI, and played more as a front-line bowler. Playing for Manicaland turned out to be a great boost for his career, where he was able to play a major role with bat and ball.Blessing is a pleasant young man but, no doubt because he is from a smaller centre, he is less guarded about his hopes and dreams than the city-dwellers. He dreams of breaking Brian Lara’s Test batting record and says, “I think I am going to bring a surprise for Zimbabwe cricket.” How far he goes will depend on his ability to adjust to the higher level and his own determination and commitment.Cricket heroes: Guy Whittall – ‘he’s a match-winner and plays to win.’Toughest opponents: Eddo Brandes and Andy Flower.Personal ambitions: “I want to play for the national team and one thing I am trying hard to achieve is to break the world Test batting record.”Proudest achievement so far: “In 1999 I performed well and was given an award at the high schools festival at Prince Edward for the most promising upcoming batsman.”Best friends in cricket: “None in particular; they are all my friends.”Other qualifications: 8 points for A-levels. “If I was not playing cricket I would be in architecture or quantity surveying.”Other sports: Basketball, rugby, soccer, tennis and rounders for the school. Now ‘just a bit of swimming’.Outside interests: Listening to music and staying away from the noise!

Former Crystal Palace striker Bent reacts to Vieira appointment

Former Crystal Palace striker Marcus Bent has backed the decision to appoint Patrick Vieira as the Eagles’ new manager.

After a lengthy search for Roy Hodgson’s successor, Vieira has moved into the Selhurst Park hotseat having been handed the reins on Sunday.

A host of big names were linked with the top job, with former Borussia Dortmund chief Lucien Favre among those to turn down the position, before ex-Arsenal captain Vieira was appointed on a three-year deal.

It is Vieira’s first managerial position since being sacked as Nice’s boss after a two-and-a-half year stint in charge of the French club.

Vieira began his coaching career in charge of Major League Soccer franchise New York City FC in 2016, but it is the first time the ex-France international will be in a Premier League dugout.

Despite his lack of experience in comparison to previous Palace boss Hodgson, Bent believes Vieira will prove to be a success at Selhurst Park.

Bent exclusively told Football FanCast: “Personally, I thought they needed to go down the Vieira route.

“The manager had to be experienced to a certain extent but they needed a breath of fresh air. They needed some input of life.”

Manchester City: Fans react to Ferran Torres update

Manchester City attacker Ferran Torres has signified he would be comfortable playing as a centre-forward more often in 2021/22 [City Xtra].

Enjoying a productive 2020/21 campaign, the Spaniard chipped in with 16 goal contributions in 36 appearances for the Blues; 13 goals and three assists [Transfermarkt].

Now fresh from a run to the semi-final of EURO 2020 with his native land, Torres has talked himself up when asked about a permanent stint leading the Manchester City front-line, stating: “Now I have to say I feel very comfortable playing as a No 9 too” [City Xtra].

Of course, the 21-year-old has predominantly featured as a winger within the duration of his short career. However, with the departure of Citizens legend Sergio Aguero to Barcelona last month [Sky Sports], there is a sizeable void to fill from an offensive perspective at the Etihad Stadium.

That said, loads of Manchester City diehards took to Twitter to voice their frustration at the recent suggestion as they believe this means the club will not properly replace Aguero with a like-for-like.
